JUVENILE COURT INTAKE OFFICER
|
|
| In 1998, Judge Nicastro partnered with the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court to host a juvenile court intake officer at the Garfield Heights Municipal Court. This partnership has successfully enabled the Juvenile Court to expand services to the municipalities within the Garfield Heights Municipal Court district.
The intake officer’s office is across the hall from Judge Nicastro’s courtroom and provides the following services:
- Accepts complaints from parents and legal guardians against juveniles regarding unruly and delinquent behavior
- Accepts complaints against juveniles from police agencies within the Garfield Heights Municipal Court district
- Conducts mediations where the intake officer believes they will have a positive impact on a child and/or the family
- Provides referrals to parents in need of assistance with children displaying inappropriate behavior
- Determines which cases will be heard by the Juvenile Diversion Program and which will be referred directly to Juvenile Court
In 2004, at the suggestion of Judge Nicastro, Juvenile Intake Officer James Roberson partnered with Marymount Hospital to create a Parenting Program, which is a weekly seminar to support and educate parents and guardians feeling overwhelmed by their teenagers’ difficult behaviors. The program consists of six sessions and addresses issues such as coping with personal stress, understanding adolescent development, ways to communicate and build relationships, and ideas for responding to problem behaviors.
